Why New Years Resolutions don’t work: A theory

January 1st is a great time to commit to making positive changes in our lives. It’s a new month, a new year, and an opportunity for a fresh start. So why, more often than not, do we find ourselves falling flat by February? I have a theory. Creating new years resolutions has become a time honoured tradition in our society, we pledge to reshape our lives for the better come the new year. This aspect of our culture gets us thinking…

Our Kitchen: as we found it

We have been making our way through our main floor renovation, which focuses on the foyer and into the kitchen area.  This is what we have accomplished so far: removed all the decorative trim in the foyer refinished the walls in the foyer and up the stairs expanded and installed a new hall closet replaced the existing foyer AND kitchen floor That’s right, we’ve moved right into the kitchen area.  We had some wall repair to complete in the kitchen…

modern wood and wire ornaments

I’ve been having too much fun playing with wooden beads, wire and pom poms this year, designing new tree ornaments. The teardrop shaped baubles from last week turned out so cute, I just kept right on trying different combinations! I knew I wanted to create a modern ornament this year with wire and wooden beads, and I am so happy with how these pieces look.  They are fairly easy to make, if you’ve got strong fingers and some patience, and don’t require…

Modern Nordic inspired ornaments

I am waaaay behind on Christmas this year.  We had a bit of a tree fiasco, and it’s put a bit of a delay on the Holiday decorating.  I seem to suddenly be allergic to everything, and after one day of having our beautiful real tree I was in full sick mode.  We moved it to the front porch, were it will still get lit up, and started searching for a fake tree. To be honest, I was a little…

NEW FLOOR FOR THE FOYER

After we installed the new foyer closet, we were left with a bit of a….mess. Removing the kitchen pantry to enlarge the foyer closet forced our renovation into the kitchen area (see that post here).  We were FULLY aware this was going to happen and already had a plan in place to do a little kitchen facelift along with the foyer update.  The floor, however, was not initially a part of that plan.  Well, it certainly is now…. The existing…

SAN DIEGO

We were lucky enough to travel to San Diego, California this past summer, my FIRST time in California.  Let me tell you, I LOVED it there.  If you have never been to California, put it on your list!  It is such a great place to explore, relax and indulge, the atmosphere is simply amazing. We saw as many places as possible while we were there for the week, visiting recommended attractions and touring a bit of the coastline, but it was…

THE CLOSET

Last progress post we left off with a great big hole in the foyer where the closet used to be.  Oh.  I mean a great big hole combined with a smaller hole where the pantry used to be.  SO.  Now what….. Typically at this point we would move any electrical necessary (there was an outlet inside the pantry closet) then frame, drywall, mud, and paint the interior of the closet.  We’d also frame the opening and add the doors; sliding, bi-fold,…

HOW WE PLANNED AHEAD BEFORE RENOVATING

This foyer renovation has been on hold for a few years, life just takes over at times, but there was, and is,  another contributing factor that held up making these changes.  This was the consideration of making even BIGGER changes.  I always look at any space as a whole and am constantly assessing how we, as a family, use our home and what sort of changes could be made to make it function even better.  When it comes to the foyer, I have a grand plan…

RENOVATING: IT’S ALL CONNECTED

THE HALL The messiest part of this project is OVER….and it actually ended up not being too bad.  Our decision to skim coat the terrible texture from the walls in the hall and up the stairs has paid off. These pictures do not do the change justice, but I can tell you, its the best change we’ve made in this space so far!! The carpet on the stairs and the railing are going, and the curved details on the stair…

PICKING UP WHERE WE LEFT OFF IN THE FOYER

Does anyone remember THIS POST ?  That was over TWO YEARS ago!  We were just about to start a somewhat major renovation on our main floor when we were sidetracked by work, kids in sports, life. If you’ve been curious, no, the closet area did not magically begin to function for our family and, NO, the children did not learn to pick up their things and file them neatly away making for a beautiful, working entry way.  We just had a (disgusting)…
