Bathroom: the design decision

After contemplating our options (and our budget) for the bathroom, we have come to a decision. Last week I reviewed the potential options for a renovation we didn’t expect and haven’t planned for. You can take a look at that breakdown in this post.  From a design perspective, the idea of half finishing a space is a difficult one for me, so options #1 or #2 are not my first choice.  We also can’t magically make money appear, so that…

LOCAL: ROCK GLEN CONSERVATION AREA

We were recently looking for something new and fun to do with the kids.  We didn’t want to travel too far, but craved a little adventure.  After doing some good old googling, we settled on a day at Rock Glen.  We are both familiar with the local attraction, but I hadn’t been since I was a child and had only vague memories of the place.  Well.  It was pretty awesome. After parking you walk around the trail and almost immediately…

Bathroom: an unexpected reno

So, we had a bit of an event here at the LND residence a little while ago… It turns out the shower in the second story bathroom was not standing up to our daily use.  For some time water had been seeping though the grout lines to the drywall behind.  I had noticed there were a few places that the grout was thinning, and needed to be re-grouted, I just didn’t know that water was already seeping in. Showers can be constructed in such a…

An argument for sleep

I will admit it. I was one of those people who wore my lack of sleep as a badge of honour.  I absolutely felt it was irrefutable proof that I was committed, determined, and SUCCESSFUL.  I would repeatedly go with about 3 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period for weeks at a time, often interspersed with going 24 hrs + without any sleep at all.  I did this for about 2 years, and I didn’t see anything wrong…

Kitchen: The lighting dilemma

I am at a design impasse. The kitchen has been pretty functional for some time now.  There are several things left to finish this space, like the upper cabinets in the coffee bar area, and shelving above the new counter beside the range, but first I have to finally address the lighting issue…The lighting in the space needs some help…a lotta help, actually.  There are functional and aesthetic issues going on and I’ve been on the fence on how to…

What my dog taught me about happiness

I have a dog. His name is Brian. He is smart enough to be annoying and cute enough to get away with it. We spend a lot of time together, him and I.   With a home office and hours spent working at my desk, he is often my only source for conversation. So, you know, we chat. Lately I’ve started calling him my therapy dog even though he has zero training and therefore no claim to such a prestigious title.…

Kitchen: Adding furniture style storage

Way back months and months ago (has it been a YEAR?) when we were staring work on the foyer, you might recall we removed the pantry that was in the kitchen (check out that progress here and here).  The pantry never functioned well for us. It was always messy because the shelves were difficult to access, and it took up space where more kitchen counter should have been. We also thought the pantry space would be better utilized as entry way storage,…

Kitchen: We have a backsplash!

THE TILE I’ve had the backsplash for this kitchen selected for over a year.  I just wanted a simple, clean lined, WHITE, backsplash.  Nothing decorative, or detailed.  We went with a 3×11 in. white subway tile. A teeny bit different than the classic 3x6in subway, just a bit more modern with the elongated rectangular shape.  I know, just about anything might be better than this copper beauty: WHAT WE STARTED WITH There were actually two different backsplash finishes in the…

Kitchen Cabinets: Painting Plastic Laminate

I was definitely hesitant to take on the challenge of painting out our kitchen cabinets. A.) because I knew we would not be spraying them and was concerned that we would not be able to achieve a smooth, quality finish and B.) the cabinets are a plastic laminate to which I believed NOTHING would stick. I absolutely think there are SO MANY things skilled and committed homeowners can take on and effectively DIY.  Refinishing a plastic laminate cabinet (which is not…

Kitchen Cabinets: A More Functional Layout

As part of our kitchen maintenance makeover madness (as I like to call it) we made the decision to refinish the laminate cabinets. This decision also allowed us to make some layout changes to the kitchen.  If we were going be painting, that means we can move some things around and the new paint finish will cover the adjustments!  Well, OK THEN.  The wheels get to turnin’. We always had an issue with the upper cabinets above the peninsula, but they provided…
