Before and After – family room

As an Interior Designer I love a good before and after shot!  It still amazes me how different a space can look after something as simple as paint, flooring some amazing fabrics.  Add fixtures, furniture and maybe a built-in and you can have something pretty fantastic.

Here  is one of the ‘before and after’s’ completed by Love Nest Design.  These spaces are a combination of existing pieces and new, illustrating that you don’t necessarily have to break the bank to update your space.

This family room was quite dated, and although it was meticulously kept it simply wasn’t in the style that reflected the new homeowner.

Because this room was going to be the home’s primary family room complete with surround sound, large television, and as much seating as comfortably possible, it needed some work.  The first update was to get rid of the old carpet, which had seen its day, and replace it with hardwood flooring.  The second major addition was a wall to wall built in unit meant to house all of the electronic equipment, create some storage space, and cover some of the brick fireplace.  This unit was custom designed and built by Love Nest Design.

The brick mantel was replaced with a new, more substantial walnut mantel creating a central focal point.  The fireplace insert itself is original but was refinished in black to create a more modern look.  The brick which was left exposed was also refinished in a dark navy paint: Behr’s Twilight Chimes.  Although refacing the brick and replacing the insert would have been ideal, often times a budget won’t allow for EVERYTHING to be updated!  By refinishing the existing elements you can still create a new, more modern look, without devoting too much of your budget towards it.

Most of the furniture was also existing, except for the coffee table.  This piece was also custom designed and built by Love Nest Design.  I find that every so often I can’t find that perfect piece that I am looking for, but I CAN design it!  This coffee table was one of those times!  The existing furniture was incorporated into this room by adding new toss cushions in the color theme of the space.

This family room’s base color, or neutral, is grey and the accents used are navy and coral with hits of gold in a few of the accessories.  The wall color is a custom Benjamin Moore tint close to Benjamin Moore’s Wickham Grey.  The accent colors are spread throughout the room using fabrics and accessories. All the photographs used are in black and white, and the art in the room is navy and coral.

Searching for the perfect accessories for a space doesn’t necessarily happen in one or two trips.  I find getting started with a few items in the color scheme is a good idea, you can then take your time adding items that you love to your collection.  There are a few items in this space that were designed and built by Love Nest Design as I found I wanted something very specific.  The trays on the coffee table for example, was custom designed and built to co-ordinate with this space.

Many details go into creating a space from the built ins to the smallest accessory, and rooms will evolve over the years.  In order to ensure your space will stand the test of time choose large items such as furniture and built ins that you LOVE, are timeless, and are good quality.  The fabrics and accessories can be more flexible and FUN because they will inevitably change over time.

    Beautiful transformation!

I love the way you really brightened up the room. I’m working on a room renovation myself in my studio and office but with no budget. Hopefully that will change soon and we’ll have a chance to work together.
